What If Alignment Is What You’ve Been Missing?

There was a time in my life when everything looked right on the outside.
I had a solid job. A steady income. Recognition. A clear path.
But something inside me was restless.
It wasn’t dramatic, it was more like a quiet hum of discomfort. A subtle sense that I was slightly off course. Not wrong, just… not quite me.
Eventually, I made a decision that many people would call risky: I walked away from a well-paid career without a clear plan of what was next.
Not out of recklessness, but because the alternative, staying out of alignment, no longer felt possible.
🌿 What alignment really means, to me
In my experience, alignment isn’t about having the perfect life. It’s not a glossy vision board or an endless state of “flow.”It’s more like this:
A quiet sense of inner coherence
The feeling that your choices reflect your values
Being able to meet the ups and downs of life without betraying yourself
Sometimes alignment brings clarity. Sometimes it brings more questions. But underneath it all, it brings a sense of groundedness that helps you stay close to yourself, even in the unknown.
🚩 Signs You Might Be Out of Alignment
It’s not always easy to spot misalignment. But here are a few clues that something might need adjusting:
You feel drained after work, even when the day wasn’t "that bad"
You second-guess yourself constantly
You’re productive, but not fulfilled
You keep doing what’s expected, but it doesn’t feel like you
You say yes when you mean no, and then feel resentful
You’ve lost touch with what actually brings you joy
These don’t mean you’re doing life wrong. They’re just signals. Gentle nudges from within.
🧭 A Real-Life Example: Alignment in Action
Here’s an example from a client who came to me feeling a lack of confidence at work. I've kept the details light to preserve anonymity, but this is not an isolated case. This is a real example that shows up again and again with clients.
Before coaching:They were...
Struggling with knowing how to balance fitting in with being themselves
This meant they lacked confidence and often felt like they were holding themselves back.
During our sessions:We explored...
What they really wanted out of the situation, and what it felt like to be truly, deeply, themself.
They started to recognise how they could hold their own centre, their own shape while also choosing to fit into the situation so that they got their needs and goals met while being present to the needs of the others.
Afterwards:They didn’t blow up their life. But they did...
Work felt much more reasonable, and they started to enjoy their working relationships much more. Over time they actually got noticed more and their career developed better than expected.
They felt that they were now much more aligned with themselves, and able to show up more fully at work. They felt accepted by those around them, but also by themselves.
Let’s clear up a few things:
Myth: If I’m aligned, everything will be easy.
Truth: Alignment can actually feel challenging at first. It often asks us to slow down, say no, or unlearn old patterns.
Myth: Alignment means I’ve found the perfect job/life path.
Truth: It’s less about what you do and more about how you show up to it.
Myth: Once I find alignment, I’ll stay there.
Truth: Alignment is ongoing. Life shifts—and so do we. It’s something we return to again and again.
🛠️ A Gentle Way In: Micro-Practices
You don’t need to make a huge leap to move toward alignment. Here are some soft, do-able starting points:
Morning check-in: Ask yourself, What do I need today to feel a little more like myself?
Energy tracking: Notice when you feel most alive and when you feel most drained.
Mini acts of honesty: Say what you actually think—just once this week—in a conversation where you’d usually hold back.
Play with pace: Slow something down. Or speed something up. See what feels more you.
🌀 Two Questions for You
Where might you be slightly off track—even if things look okay from the outside?
And where are you already closer to yourself than you realise?
Sometimes, feeling “off” is the first whisper of a more honest path.
